Event Descriptions
HERD WORK
The horse walks slowly into a large group of cattle. Four other mounted helpers are present to contain the herd. The horse dodges back and forth in front of a single steer, keeping it from returning to the herd of cattle.
The horse should calmly separate a number of cattle from the herd without unsettling the rest of the group, then gradually allow all but one to 'peel off' and return to the herd. The horse should keep his head low and go about his work quietly.
The steer should not be able to get around horse and back to the herd until the entry “quits” that steer and goes to select another. Two to three steers will be worked in the two and a half minute time period.
REIN WORK
The horse is put through a series of manouvers including figure eights, run-downs and spins. The horse should be able to complete the manouvers with rhythm, balance and agility.
FENCE WORK
The horse must again complete three manouvers. In boxing, the
steer should remain boxed until entry obviously allows it to escape
down the long side at the beginning of the fence run phase.
Next in the fence runs, the horse should hold the steer on the
fence during a turn, keeping it from running to the center of
the arena. Lastly, the horse circles up the steer in a full circle
one way, and then a full circle the other way.
