Horse
History
The raising and marketing of horses is considered an agricultural activity
by Alberta Agriculture in the same manner as any other class of livestock.
Horse businesses tend to be specialized. The market for horses, lessons,
boarding and training is directed to the public from a sport and recreation
aspect. Whereas most horses are purchased for the enjoyment of the buyer,
racehorses are marketed relative to their potential ability to race and
win money. According to the 2001 Census, there were 53,925 farms reporting
a total of 460,569 horses and ponies in Canada, while Alberta reported
17,807 farms with 159,962 horses and ponies. *
