So You Think You Have a Closed Herd
Cale Place
Cale Place grew up ranching in the foothills southwest of Nanton, Alberta, and continues that tradition today alongside his wife Jennifer. With a strong background in both agriculture and oilfield services, Cale brings a practical, grounded perspective to livestock management and producer support. His current role with Alberta Beef Producers allows him to work directly with ranchers across the province, helping them strengthen their operations through Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+).
In his session, So You Think You Have a Closed Herd, Cale will explore the hidden biosecurity risks that can affect even the most well-managed herds, especially when animals are transported to competitions or events. Attendees will learn how to spot vulnerabilities, apply simple protective measures, and rethink what “closed herd” really means in today’s livestock landscape.
Cale also coordinates on-farm audits, delivers VBP+ training, and supports producers through certification and renewal processes. His work is rooted in a deep commitment to keeping Alberta’s beef industry strong, safe, and sustainable.
